Project Engineer

Job Description Summary:

The Project Engineer is responsible for leading the design team to manage and coordinate the technical deliverables required for process systems including supporting discipline engineering as well as managing the basic engineering for the project. The Project Engineer will be able to develop the conceptual and basic engineering documents including the system layout, equipment arrangements, design criteria, PFD and major equipment specifications. Proficient in all facets of project engineering and phases of the project life cycle, including FEL staged gate project delivery process, project scope development, execution planning, cost, scheduling, and construction planning.

This position is responsible for managing the development of the overall system design including assuring that the proper sequence of engineering is followed for the projects. The Project Engineer will work under the Client Project Managers responsible for covering design activities, have some EPC experience, coordinating and driving design.  The Project Engineer is responsible for working with the design team to deliver a quality product as well as maintain schedule and achieve overall project success for the project and client.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that you have a good relationship with clients, co-workers, and management
  • Develop engineering plan for the project
  • Monitor engineering to ensure project specifications and criteria are being followed to meet schedule
  • Responsible for review of all engineering drawings and technical specifications
  • Manage the Needs/Action items for the project
  • Work in conjunction with the PM to manage and communicate client expectations within the terms of contract
  • Hold regular project meetings with the design team to determine progress and info required to maintain schedule
  • Communicate decisions, changes, etc. across all Design Teams
  • Provide input to Project Manager for updates to project budget and schedule
  • Ultimate responsibility for overall project QA/QC
  • Review assigned engineering deliverables and budgeted man-hours per discipline with Design Teams
  • Develop the engineering schedule for the project
  • Assure the Design Teams stay on schedule, scope, and hours


Job Qualifications

  • General understanding of all engineering disciplines
  • Able to identify and analyze problems and implement solutions
  • Able to make technical decisions and focus on technical solutions
  • Strong understanding of the overall project engineering process
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple disciplines including mechanical, structural, electrical and control systems.
  • General understanding of individual discipline design criteria and key information requirements for each engineering discipline
  • Demonstrated experience with planning and overseeing engineering activities in conjunction with procurement and construction activities
  • Demonstrated experience working with clients to develop a jointly approved set of basic engineering documents
  • Demonstrated experience understanding the overall sequence of procurement and construction of small to medium scale industrial projects
  • Demonstrated experience following quality assurance and control procedures
  • Demonstrated experience developing engineering scopes of work and execution schedules as well as work breakdown schedules
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical meetings
  • Demonstrated experience working within owner project engineering group or construction firm
  • Demonstrated experience in chemical plants (preferred) and in any of the following industries: bulk terminals, liquid terminals, chemical plants, petrochemical plants, oil and gas, power plants, steel, or process plants



  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 10+ years’ related experience preferred but not required
